"They Say"
Exercise 1:
A) Many scientists' experiments suggest that there are dangerous levels of Chemical X in the Ohio groundwater.
B) Some critics would say that this novel has certain flaws.
C) Women are more likely to think football is boring, rather than men.
D) Most teachers and students believe that male students often dominate class discussions.
E) Many film critics have said that this film is really about the problems of romantic relationships.
F) Certain people may think that templates like the ones in this book will stifle their creativity.
Exercise 2:
If ever there was an idea custom-made for a Jay Leno monologue, this was it: dressing up your dog. Isn't that like putting a collar on your baby? Whatever happened to animal rights?
I happen to sympathize with pet owners, though, perhaps because although I would rather not see my dog dressed up in ridiculous ensembles, it is quite amusing to see them dressed up as a pumpkin or a bunny.

Hey Breann. In my opinion, you did a great job adding in relevant "they said" arguments for exercise #1. The "they" complements the statement perfectly like in A. when you said "many scientists' experiments suggest" which makes sense with the scientific statement given for you to work with. However with that said, some of the beginnings, although they work well, sound redundant. You used many twice and most, some, and certain which all tend to have the same general meaning. I know this was just an exercise but you might want to make sure your sentense starts vary in actual composition assignments.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with Kobbers, i think you did a very good job converting the arguments from 'i say' to 'they say'. However, they are all very similar to each other. I would suggest that instead of doing all in certain people's view, try do general view also. And i like the example on your second exercise, it is interesting and very ture.
ReplyDeleteI think you followed the instructions correctly. We were asked to use the templates given and you did just that. If this were an essay and you had to use all the sentences together, than yes, perhaps it would sound redundant.
ReplyDeleteYour second example was good and sort of like the dry humor that late night talk shows such as Jay Leno are known for using.
Breann,
ReplyDeleteYou did a marvelous job on this assignment. Just like tinan106 stated, you did everything just as you were supposed to. But I also agree with Huang 88, they do sound a tad similar.
The second example was very funny to me. You got that one right on the money. Keep up the good work.
